Artisan | Woodturner: Ryoichi | 亮一

About👤

Year of Birth: TBD

Location:

Style: Sōsaku Kokeshi

The artisan signs their work with the given name Ryoichi (亮一), which is typically used as a first name. Public sources suggest a possible surname of Funayama (船山), a relatively uncommon name most frequently found in Tokyo, Yamagata, and Tochigi prefectures. While “Funayama” may indeed be a family name, it is also associated with various place names and shrines across Japan. At present, we are unable to confirm whether the reference denotes a surname or a place of origin connected to the artisan’s work.

The artisan’s creations are typically small in scale, featuring childlike expressions and motifs that reflect the four seasons, acorns, or young girls with mage-style hair. Each piece is rendered in natural wood tones with minimal use of paint, emphasizing the warmth and texture of the material itself.
