Miyashita Hajime orignally studied as a, traditional, Yamagata-Sakunami artisan under Master Kobayashi Kichitaro. He has won many awards, and the crown prince Naruhito and princess Masako have collected his Kokeshi. He won the Prime Ministers award in 1977. His Kokeshi career spanned from 1959 to 2006 when he retired after his shop in Maebashi City, Gunma Prefecture burned down.
