About👤

Kato Masami is the eldest daughter of Sato Tamio of Ichisako, Miyagi Prefecture. She married Kato Shinichi, a respected Narugo-style traditional Kokeshi artisan who after retiring in 1976 began his Kokeshi apprenticeship under Naruko artisan Onuma Jun.

Kato-san was born in Narugo, Miyagi Prefecture, she begain painting and coloring her husband’s Kokeshi wood forms in the 1980s initially only painting Narugo Kokeshi. In time her work would evolve to include sōsaku Kokeshi. She has received numerous accolades throughout her career, including the prestigious Prime Minister’s Award for her Kokeshi titled “Akikusa” meaning Autumn.

Through careful research it becomes evident that Kokeshi artisans like Masami played a vital role in preserving cultural values, customs, and traditional fashions through their work. Masami experimented with various hairstyles, often carving them in striking, lifelike detail, including elaborate oversized *mage* and other traditional arrangements. Her paintwork is enhanced by finely carved garments, adding rich three-dimensional texture and elevating each figure into a deeply expressive work of art.
