About👤

Patrick Pathenay, the artist behind Patrick Kokeshi, is a French craftsman whose works are best described as sōsaku Kokeshi—independent creations reflecting personal vision. Despite this categorization, he chose to apprentice with Yajirō artisan Niyama Minoru, seeking hands-on insight into traditional techniques and exploring the possibility of introducing classic Kokeshi forms to a French audience. His dedication has already earned him multiple awards.

A professional illustrator by trade, Patrick has long been captivated by Japan’s traditional handicrafts. Since discovering Kokeshi in 2007, he felt inspired to craft something entirely new—distinct from existing Kokeshi offerings. His early focus centered on the natural grain and beauty of the wood itself, using it as the foundation for his design philosophy.

As his understanding deepened, he developed a particular admiration for Kokeshi of the 1950s and 60s, which continue to influence his work. Today, his designs have evolved to incorporate carving techniques and unique hair treatments, adding dimension and individuality to each doll. He works from his studio in Alsace, Eastern France, where he continues to blend tradition with innovation.
